The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is closely monitoring developments related to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Please know that our thoughts are with those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The health and safety of our members and volunteers is the utmost priority of our society. As the President of the VT Society, it is, therefore, my duty to make sure that we provide the best level of services we can in this difficult time to our members while maintaining the health and safety of all in any way possible. Together with the VTS Executive Committee and the VTS Board of Governors, I will be continually monitoring the situation and make necessary changes to our services that are affected by the outbreak. At the same time, we put our energy in introducing new services that could substitute the regular member services. Be assured that VTS is with you and behind you. We will do all we possibly can to reduce the impact of this unprecedented situation on the educational and training activities for our members in academia, government, and industry. Together, I am sure we can pass this difficult time and come out from it with greater experience and innovation. I encourage all members to please stay strong, safe, and positive.

I am always available to you for any questions, suggestions, ideas, or comments on how VTS can better serve the VTS membership. So, please do not hesitate to let me know by contacting me directly at

VTS Conferences:

Technical events and conferences in general, due to their natural need of gathering a large number of people and a wide range of travels, have been the most impacted services of all organizations and VTS conferences are no exception. VTS understand the fact that conferences are an important factor in publications of papers by graduate students and academics, in the dissemination of new product and services by industry and government agencies, and in providing a networking platform for the profession. We, therefore, decided to make sure that we can still publish papers accepted in our major conferences so the students can graduate, and our researchers can register their novel ideas and outcomes. As a result, we will make gradual decisions on all future conferences run by the Vehicular Technology Society:

  • The VTS Board of Governors has decided to convert IEEE VTC2020-Spring in Antwerp, Belgium, to a fully virtual conference for the original date, 25 – 28 May 2020. We do realize that this formula will not allow reproducing the professional networking environment that you are used to, but it will allow VTC2020-Spring to still attain a portion of its objectives. We will provide detailed instructions on presentations, as soon as its platform is completed under the guidance of the IEEE Event Emergency Response Team (EERT) to assure the best outcome. Please check the VTC2020-Spring webpage frequently for updated information for authors and attendees.

  • IEEE Wireless Africa 2020 is now planned to be held on 19-20 November 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa. Please send your strong support to this great event specially designed for Africa by submitting your papers.

  • IEEE VTC2020-Fall will be held in Victoria, B.C., Canada on 4-7 October 2020. Please support this event with your great paper submissions. We will monitor the situation and will make reasonable decisions on the format of the conference and the delivery of its goals.

  • Our 2020 Joint Rail Conference (JRC) with ASME which was scheduled on April 20-22, 2020 in Union Station Hotel in St. Louis, MO, is now postponed to April 19-21, 2021. The venue will remain the same. VTS and ASME regret having to reschedule the conference, but the safety of our participants is our utmost priority. The 2020 JRC organizer ASME has informed those who have already registered for the conference that they will issue a full refund.

Please note that it is the intention to be flexible and helpful to everyone during this time of difficulty. VTS is fully supportive of IEEE’s mission statement and we wish you and all people success in dealing with any local challenges you may be facing.

VTS Distinguished Lectures:

Due to the unprecedented situation with the Coronavirus outbreak, global restrictions on travels, and limits on gatherings of a certain number of people in confined areas in several countries, VTS is making the following changes to the Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and Distinguished Speaker (DS) programs. These are to make sure that the health and safety of our volunteers, members, and other attendees in the lectures are assured.

  • All pre-approved DL/DS tours are suspended until 30 June 2020. The date may change and/or extended beyond 30 June 2020 as the situation with Coronavirus changes.

  • The DLs/DSs may choose to instead run their lecture online as pre-recorded with the agreement with the respective local chapter(s).

  • VTS has decided to extend the DL terms for those whose term finishes in June 2020 for 6 months. VTS also waives the requirement for one DL per two years for the first half of 2020 for those whose DL condition hasn’t been met yet.

VTS Publications:

VTS publications including the fully sponsored IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, and VTS Mobile World as well as other VTS cosponsored publications will continue to operate as usual. These are great venues for publications of your research results, especially in this difficult time. Please continue your support by submitting a high-quality manuscript for peer-review and possible publications. Our publications committee and editors are working hard to maintain the utmost quality of your publications.
