The Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is composed of engineers, scientists, students, and technicians, interested in advancing the theory and practice of electrical engineering as it applies to the following areas: land, airborne, and maritime mobile services. We look to also advance the portable communications services, vehicular electrotechnology, automotive industry equipment and systems; and traction power, signals, communications, and control systems.
As a member, you’ll receive:
- Free Access to the TA Resource Center, which offers keynote and panel presentations from VTS events, recording of Distinguished Lectures, and educational video modules
- Access to local VTS chapters and our Distinguished Lecturer program, with over 50 world-class speakers
- Access to VTS Mobile World Newsletter
- Free printed copies of the VT Magazine and other printed Publications, including Conference Proceedings
- Discounts for VTS-sponsored conferences and community events
- Eligibility for VTS volunteering opportunities
We look forward to welcoming you as a new IEEE Vehicular Technology Society member!
Welcome from VTS President
Welcome to the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society; a very special and unique technical society of the IEEE with great interests in technologies that matter to all people around the world, say mobile radio, land transportation, motor vehicles, propagation, connected and automated vehicles, and related applications. The primary purpose of the VTS is to serve the professional development needs of all our members and ensure they stay on top of the latest advances in several technological areas that are rapidly evolving. In order to help support the needs of all our members, the VTS provides a wide range of services and multiple opportunities to support the professional development and growth of individuals from industry, academia, and government. Structurally, VTS organizes these services and opportunities into three categories: membership development, conferences, and publications.
VTS Membership Development primarily focuses on activities that immediately support the professional development needs of VTS members, including our worldwide network of active local chapters, our stellar Distinguished Lecture (DL) program, and our many awards and recognitions. Local chapters are an excellent way of engaging and networking with other VTS members within your geographical area in order to learn about the latest technologies as well as explore new collaborative opportunities. One service that is almost exclusively available only to local VTS chapters is our DL program, which is designed to support renowned experts specializing in one or more of the VTS technical areas to present invited talks at these chapters anywhere around the world.
When one thinks of networking opportunities and information exchange, technical conferences are probably one of the best approaches for supporting these member-to-member engagements on a very large scale. VTS Conferences are specifically designed to create environments that readily facilitate the exchange of new ideas and help foster opportunities for new collaborations. Our flagship conference, the Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC), takes place twice a year at locations around the world and serve as a rallying point for engineers, scientists, and technologists specializing in areas such as mobile radio, connected vehicles, 5G, land transportation systems, vehicular electronics, wireless propagation, and automated vehicles. VTC hosts an array of more than 50 technical sessions per event, numerous keynote presentations, tutorial sessions, workshops, and our ever-growing industry tracks; VTC has something for everyone. Additionally, the Vehicular Power and Propulsion Conference (VPPC) is the preeminent annual conference specializing in the dissemination of new results and ideas in vehicular power and propulsion systems. Finally, there exists a multitude of other technical conferences that the VTS in involved with worldwide, both at the international level as well as at the regional level.
Information dissemination of the latest ideas and research findings is one of the critical activities of the VTS. In order to provide peer-reviewed venues for the latest results in vehicular technology, VTS Publications is responsible for the operation of two high quality and high impact journals: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine. Both publications include papers covering a breadth of topics from the vehicular technology world, ranging from land transportation systems and autonomous vehicles to mobile radio, connected vehicles, and 5G. However, the type of papers published by each venue is different. For the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, papers published in this journal often explore novel discoveries with respect to fundamental concepts, which are rigorously verified using mathematical derivations, computer simulations, and hardware experimentation. On the other hand, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine is much more focused on the latest advances in vehicular technology from an applications perspective. Consequently, the VTS has a journal venue for everyone to submit and publish their latest findings and ideas. Additionally, on occasion both the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine hosts special issues focusing on emerging technical areas, such as 5G and automotive cyber security, in order to provide VTS members with the latest cutting-edge knowledge.
In parallel to the membership development, conference, and publication activities framework, the VTS has also organized itself into a variety of technical communities, including 5G, land transportation, connected and autonomous vehicles, electric vehicle propulsion, propagation, and land mobile radio. These technical communities are designed to bring together researchers, engineers, and technologists that are interested in a specific technical area of the VTS and organize activities that transcend the membership development, conference, and publication activities framework. In all these technical communities, there exists a chair that is responsible for working with VTS volunteers and coordinate new activities to support the professional development and growth of VTS members in these technical communities.
In describing all these activities that support the professional development of our VTS members, there are numerous details that I was unable to cover. Fortunately, our new VTS website is an excellent online portal for finding out more about these services and more. Check out the "member resources" section, which is accessible from the top menu bar, to find out more on the types of services and opportunities available to you as a VTS member. Also, please consider actively participating in the VTS since it is volunteerism that enables almost all the great services we have to offer. If you have any other questions or would like to find out how you can leverage your VTS membership to help your professional development, please feel free to reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Finally, never forget to attend, learn, and engage with the VTS!
