Haibin Zhang is senior scientist and strategist at TNO. He is responsible for research, technical and strategic consultancy in TNO activities related to 5G/6G and upcoming wireless technology, 5G/6G for vertical applications, and sustainable ICT networks. He is visiting professor at National Taiwan University (NTU), and fellow of the IET.
He is active in R&D project acquisitions and international research community. He co-initiated multiple Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020 and FP7 projects (AMAZING-6G, 5G-HEART, Clear5G, SUNSEED, SAPHYRE), Bell-Labs co-financed BCG2 and multiple customer-funded projects, and taken leading scientific role in successful operation of these projects. He is TNO’s principal investigator of wireless technology in the national 6G flagship program Future Network Services (FNS). He was elected Co-chair of the Mobile Group of GreenTouch (2013-2015) and Technical Manager of Clear5G (2017-2020). He is/was co-proponent and management committee member of COST Actions INTERACT, IC1004 and IRACON , and serves/served in the Expert Advisory Group of the European Technology Platform (ETP) NetworldEurope and NetWorld2020. He acts as Publication Co-chair of IEEE Future Networks Technical Community, IET Fellowship Accessor and organizing committee member of IEEE GLOBECOM 2025.
He is inventor of 30+ granted patent families, including 5 3GPP Standard Essential Patents, and other 20+ filed patent applications. He has (co-)authored plenty of peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, book (chapters), and 3GPP standardization contributions. He is (co-)recipient of IEEE WCNC 2014 Best Paper Award, Edison Award Silver (2016), Outstanding Patent Award of KPN (2023) and Excellent Teaching Award of SJTU (2002-2024).
