Short 500-word Biography

Jae Hong Lee was with the AT&amp;T Bell Laboratories, Whippany, NJ, and joined Seoul National University (SNU), Korea, where he served as Head of EECS Department, Director of Institute of New Media and Communications, Member of University Senate, and Vice President of University Council. He is Professor Emeritus at SNU reaching his mandatory retirement age in 2019. He received Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, MI, and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University, Korea. His research interests are in physical-layer wireless communications and their applications to 5G wireless. He served as Chairman of Committee for Coordination of 3G Wireless Communication Technology Development in Korea and was a Member of the Advisory Council of 5G Forum of Korea. He was Principal Investigator in Communications for ITS Grand Design Project of the South Korean government. His laboratory at SNU was designated as a National Leading Research Laboratory by the Ministry of Education and Science of Korea. He published over 360 peer-reviewed papers and holds forty-two patents including ten U.S. patents. He served as a Member of IEEE Conferences Committee (2020-22), Conference Publications Committee (2022), Fellow Committee (2016-21), MGA Membership Recruitment &amp; Recovery Committee (2015-16), and TAB/PSPB Products and Services Committee (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2023), and Technical Activity Board (2010-11, 2022). He served for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) as President (2010-11, 2022), Executive Vice-president (2007-09), Vice-President Mobile Radio (2016-21), Elected Member of Board of Governors (2006-18, 2020-22), Asia Pacific Chapter Development Coordinator (2004-09), and Member of Distinguished Lecture Program Committee (2013-16), Fellow Committee (2013-15), and Conference Committee (2006-now). He was Founding Chair of IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Seoul Chapter (1994-2003). He served as General Chair of the 57th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (IEEE VTC2013-Spring), and Founding Chair of Board of Governors of IEEE VTS Asia Pacific Wireless Communications Symposium (APWCS) (2004-06) and its member (2007-now). He served as a Distinguished Lecturer (2011-15) and Distinguished Speaker (2015-21) of the IEEE VTS. He was Founding Chair of IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society Seoul Chapter (1995-2002). He received VTC Chairman’s Award from IEEE VTS (2004), and Outstanding Service Award from IEEE Seoul Section (2003). He was President of Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea (later renamed Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers) and President of Korean Society of Broadcast Engineers (later renamed Korean Institute of Broadcast and Media Engineers). He is an IEEE Fellow, Fellow of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, and Member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.
