Fumiyuki Adachi received the B.S. and Dr. Eng. degrees in electrical engineering from Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, in 1973 and 1984, respectively. In April 1973, he joined the Electrical Communications Laboratories of NTT and started mobile communications research. From July 1992 to December 1999, he was with NTT DOCOMO, where he led a research group on wideband/broadband wireless access for 3G and beyond. He contributed to the development of 3G air interface standard, known as W-CDMA. From October 1984 to September 1985, he was a United Kingdom SERC Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at Liverpool University. Since January 2000, he has been with Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. Currently, he is leading a resilient wireless communication research group with the aim of realizing beyond 5G systems as a Specially Appointed Research Fellow/Professor Emeritus at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University. His research interests are in the area of wireless signal processing and networking, including multi-access, equalization, antenna diversity, cooperative transmission, channel coding, radio resource management, etc.

Fumiyuki Adachi is an IEEE Life Fellow and an IEICE Life Fellow. He is a recipient of IEEE VTS Avant Garde Award 2000 for the pioneering leadership and continuing contributions in promoting new technology in the field of vehicular communications and electronics, IEICE Achievement Award 2002 for the pioneering leadership and contributions for 3rd generation mobile communications system’s development, Thomson Scientific Research Front Award 2004 for Research and development of wideband mobile wireless communication technology using code division multiple access, Prime Minister Invention Award 2010 for the invention of W-CDMA fast cell search technique, C&C Prize 2014 for outstanding leadership and contributions promoting the development and commercialization of digital mobile communications systems, IEEE VTS Stuart Meyer Memorial Award 2017 for significant research contributions and exceptional community service with respect to advanced wireless signal processing algorithms for mobile radio, IEEE ComSoc RCC Technical Recognition Award 2017 for outstanding contributions to the development of mobile radio systems, etc.
