Gary Touryan was the chair of IEEE Traction Power Substations Standards Committee for 18 years, since its inception in 2002. He led the Committee’s efforts and coordinated with APTA, AREMA, and within IEEE to develop standards and the industry best practices. The Committee wrote several national consensus standards, recommended practices, and guides which currently govern the manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and operation of traction power substations and equipment in the US and Canada. In 2022 on the recommendation of the IEEE Standards Association’s Awards and Recognition Committee and the approval of the association's Board of Governors, Gary Touryan was awarded the IEEE SA Standards Medallion “For long-term leadership of the IEEE Traction Power Standards Committee”. The IEEE SA Standards Medallion is awarded for major contributions to the development of standards.
