Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Utility Network) provides monitoring and control of smart metering systems such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as utility systems typical of smart cities. Wi-SUN devices use a standardized system in IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 2857 under the name "SUN" and are designed to operate in very large network, to support low-power wireless applications, and to achieve transmission distances of hundreds of meters to several kilometers between devices.
In addition, Wi-SUN can be used not only for peer-to-peer communication, but also to create a mesh network, utilizing multi-hop technology with more than 20 possible stages to communicate with access points to cover a large geographical area.
The Wi-SUN system is currently being developed by the Wi-SUN Alliance with technical and interoperability specifications for digestion, and is currently being developed as a HAN (Home Area Network), which will connect smart meters, various home appliances, batteries, etc. indoors, and a FAN (Field Area Network), which will connect various essential applications, such as smart meters, home appliances, and batteries indoors.

Published in volume 5, IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology
Summary contributed by Hiroshi Harada (Author): This paper presents an overview of the Wi-SUN FAN system using IEEE 802.15.4-SUN, which is currently used in multi-hop wireless IoT systems such as smart meters, and evaluates the basic transmission characteristics using computer simulations and actual devices. It is expected that the use of this paper as a reference for transmission characteristics will promote research and development of Wi-SUN based system into the improvement of various transmission characteristics in the future.

Published in volume 5, IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology
Summary contributed by Hiroshi Harada (Author): In order to enable the OFDM method standardized as IEEE 802.15.4-SUN, which is normally used in fixed installed sensors, meters, monitors, and others, to be used in mobile IoT applications, an evaluation platform based on software radio technology has been developed to enable the evaluation of the developed reception schemes using real radios.
