Call for Nominations: IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Motor Vehicles Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award

The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) invites nominations for the Motor Vehicles Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award, which recognizes outstanding doctoral research that advances the state of the art in vehicular and motor vehicle technologies.

This prestigious award honors Ph.D. dissertations that demonstrate technical excellence, originality, and impact, contributing meaningful advances to research, development, and innovation in vehicular technology–related fields.

Nomination deadline: 1 April 2026

Eligibility & Scope

  1. Either the student or (any of) the advisor(s) must be an IEEE VTS member at the moment of the application.
  2. The PhD dissertation of the nominee must have been awarded in the prior two calendar years, as indicated by the PhD diploma.
  3. Previous award winners or nominees are not eligible.
  4. Eligibility and Selection process shall comply with procedures and regulation established in IEEE and Society/Council governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations.  Previous award winners are not eligible for substantially the same achievements (per IEEE Policies 4.4: An individual shall receive only one award for a given achievement, unless the significance merits a higher award, which may be given in the following year or thereafter.)

How to Nominate

The nomination must be submitted by the PhD dissertation advisor. Self-nominations are not permitted.   The following must be submitted

  • A recommendation letter from the PhD advisor (3 pages maximum)
  • The dissertation (or a translated version) submitted in English.

Nominations are to be submitted by email as a single pdf file attachment to the Chair of the IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Award Committee bearing the subject “IEEE VTS Motor Vehicles Best PhD Dissertation Award” and with the following items stated clearly in the email text.

  1. Name of the nominee and advisor
  2. University and Department
  3. Date the PhD was awarded as indicated by the PhD diploma. 

Nominations should comply with IEEE Policies and restrictions on awards.  Incidents of misconduct including, but not limited to, violations of IEEE's publication policies, will be strongly considered by the awards committee and may be grounds for denial of an award or leadership position.
