This award recognizes the best PhD dissertation within the technical areas of motor vehicles (which includes vehicle electronics in broad sense, power and propulsion), particularly the electronic systems and control methodologies that improve the performance, efficiency, functionality, safety and user experience of a motor vehicle.

This award is funded by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. The society/council's budget includes the required funds to support this award, and the budget is net positive with the inclusion of the award. No travel allowance is provided.
The winners will be announced at the VTS Motor Vehicles Technical Committee Fall meeting and/or other VTS Motor Vehicles Technical Committee sponsored event held in conjunction with IEEE VTC20XX-Fall or IEEE VPPC 20XX.
The award recognizes and encourages the best research and writing for doctoral dissertations. Submissions are evaluated based on the dissertation’s 1) scientific contributions, 2) technical impact, 3) the merit of applicant’s publications, and 4) the recommendation letter.
- Either the student or (any of) the advisor(s) must be an IEEE VTS member at the moment of the application.
- The PhD dissertation of the nominee must have been awarded in the prior two calendar years, as indicated by the PhD diploma.
- Previous award winners or nominees are not eligible.
- Eligibility and Selection process shall comply with procedures and regulation established in IEEE and Society/Council governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations. Previous award winners are not eligible for substantially the same achievements (per IEEE Policies 4.4: An individual shall receive only one award for a given achievement, unless the significance merits a higher award, which may be given in the following year or thereafter.)
Open calls for nominations will be solicited via email notifications; IEEE Channels; IEEE vTools.
The nomination must be submitted by the PhD dissertation advisor. Self-nominations are not permitted. The following must be submitted:
- A recommendation letter from the PhD advisor (3 pages maximum)
- The dissertation (or a translated version) submitted in English.
Nominations should comply with IEEE Policies and restrictions on awards. Incidents of misconduct including, but not limited to, violations of IEEE's publication policies, will be strongly considered by the awards committee and may be grounds for denial of an award or leadership position.
