End-of-Year Message from Jae Hong Lee, VTS President
It is with great pleasure that I wish all VT Society members a Happy New Year full of happiness and success in your personal and professional lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of life: the way we live, work and travel. In the year 2023 we hope to see the end of the tunnel where normal lives and human relationships are restored and even improved with the development of new technologies.
VT Society has the unifying theme of ‘mobility.’ Under the slogan “Connecting the Mobile World,” the VT Society is committed to all aspects of mobility related to wireless communications, motor vehicles, and land transportation. Over the past decade the role and stature of VT Society has grown very rapidly in these areas with the advent of 5G, 6G, electric and connected vehicles, autonomous driving, smart land transportation and urban air mobility.
This year has been a most challenging year for all of us, but VTS continued to improve in many ways: just to mention a few. The impact factors of VTS publications have continued to rise. The Transactions on Vehicular Technology’s impact factor was 6.23 in 2022, up from 5.97 in 2021. The Vehicular Technology Magazine’s impact factor was 13.60 in 2022, up from 10.38 in 2021. TVT and TVM have significantly higher impact factors among journals in related areas.
VTC2022-Spring and VTC2022-Fall, the flagship conference of VTS with a tradition of over 70 years, were successfully held in a hybrid manner, after being held virtually for the past two years due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. VTC2022-Fall was the first VTC to be held simultaneously in two geographical venues: London, UK, and Beijing, China.
This year, VTS Board of Governors (BOG) passed motions of the VTS Constitutional Amendment and Bylaws Amendment to keep pace with the IEEE Constitutional Amendment passed in October 2022. Under the amendments, a petition must be signed by at least 2% of the total number of VT Society voting members in each Region as listed in the official membership records of VT Society at the end of the previous year, but in no case shall the total number of signatures be less than one hundred. This is to be applied to a petition to nominate candidates for Board of Governors election as well as a petition to amend either the VTS Constitution or the VTS Bylaws. VTS BOG also passed a motion to create Standing Committee Evaluation Committee which is responsible for assessing the viability of and necessity for proposed standing committees as well as existing standing committees. Upon their recommendations, BOG may form or dissolve the standing committees. These changes are expected to further energize VTS.
For personal reasons, I am not running for VTS President next year. Although my tenure as President was only one year, I believe that I have successfully addressed several important issues that were waiting to be addressed. I would like to thank all members who contributed and participated in VTS activities.
Best regards,
President, IEEE Vehicular Technology Society
