Description

The infrastructure for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging is rapidly evolving into a complex and interdisciplinary system that integrates energy, communication, and digital technologies. On one hand, it faces traditional challenges associated with electrical engineering, such as energy conversion and the management of charging of batteries , in the other hand, its connection to advanced telecommunication and information technologies enables the emergence of new services, business models, and energy scenarios. This lecture will examine these dual dimensions, highlighting emerging usage scenarios, key technical features, and the transformative potential of integrating charging systems with power, communication, and information and communication technology (ICT) networks. We will place particular emphasis on the role of modeling and simulation as essential tools for analysis and design. This includes data-driven approaches, such as Machine Learning, as well as hardware-in-the-loop experimentation. By bridging theory and practice, the lecture aims to provide insights into how EV charging infrastructures can become a cornerstone of smart, sustainable, and interconnected energy ecosystems.
