Dr James Irvine is a Reader at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, where he leads the Mobile Communications Group. He is research focuses on radio resource management and cryptography, with applications to transport and power networks. He currently heads the Communications: Systems, Integration and Security theme of the Power Networks Demonstration Centre, and was active for many years in the UK Mobile VCE research programme, as Academic Co-ordinator of three work programmes. Prior to this, he led the system architecture work on the EU MOSTRAIN project, for communications to high speed trains. A co-author of two books, seven patents and over 200 technical papers, Dr Irvine has given evidence in the UK High Court in five cases involving 2G, 3G and 4G technology disputes, and has acted as a non-testifying expert in the US, The Netherlands and Germany. He was General Co-chair of IEEE VTC2015-Spring and of IEEE WCNC2023. James started volunteering for IEEE VTS in 1999 as editor of the VTS News. He led an initiative to transform into the IEEE VT Magazine in 2006, and served as its first Editor in Chief. Elected to the Board of Governors of the Society in 2003, he has served as Executive Vice President (2007, and 2020-1), Vice President Publications 2010-15, and President 2008-9. He is also active on the Conference and Publications committees. More broadly within IEEE, James has served on three of the major Boards of the IEEE: Technical Activities, Publications and Educational Activities. A past chair of the Conference Publications and Standards Education committees, he is currently chair of the TAB/PSPB Products and Services Committee.
