Body

The transport sector places considerable importance on safety and security, as they are essential to guaranteeing every individual's freedom of movement without apprehension or fear. Unfortunately, a significant number of individuals worldwide succumb to fatalities resulting from traffic accidents. The transportation safety is impacted for example, by vehicle malfunctions, inadequate road information, or a lack of security infrastructure. Furthermore, transport systems are progressively encountering adverse impacts from acts of terrorism, bad weather, and natural disasters. In light of these concerns, various transportation companies, vehicle manufacturers, government entities, and international organizations have initiated multiple initiatives aimed at enhancing transportation safety through the development of apps, regulations, services, and technology. In addition, and as per the United Nations (UN) 2030 agenda, there is a need to improve the transport system to ensure the provision of safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems, as well as to enhance road safety. This includes measures to prevent accidents, reduce crime, and enhance the overall safety of transit environments. These efforts are crucial for creating a safe, sustainable and reliable transportation system that people can trust and depend on.

Sponsored by the IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative, this special issue aims to assist research communities in defining and shaping the architecture, technologies, and services for enhancing public safety in transportation systems (land transportation, water transportation, air transportation). We invite original contributions not published or currently under consideration by any other journals or conferences. The topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Vehicle-To-Everything (V2X) Networking for Public Safety Applications.
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems and Public Safety.
  • Safety and Security in Autonomous Vehicles.
  • Deep Learning, Machine Learning Approaches for Vulnerable Road Users’ Safety.
  • 5G+ and 6G in Public Transit and Commercial Transportation Systems.
  • Artificial Intelligence for Enhancing Public Transportation.
  • Smart Traffic Management and Monitoring for Enhanced Safety
  • Risk Assessment of Autonomous Transport Systems.
  • Networking Alarm Systems for Vehicle Anti-Theft.
  • Recent advances in Security and Safety in Maritime Transport and Air Transportation.
  • Transportation System Resiliency and Disaster Response/Recovery.
  • Safety concerns in Advanced Air Mobility Integration into Multimodal Transportation Systems.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions should clearly identify how they relate to public safety in transportation. All manuscripts should contain state-of-the-art material presented in a tutorial or survey style and must adhere to IEEE VTM guidelines. Papers presenting original and state-of-the art research and technical contributions are also considered. However, their presentation should be in tutorial-style and accessible for all readers. Submit a PDF version of complete manuscripts to the IEEE Author Portal.
